Celebrating a successful 5K FUN WALK
The threat of rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the TCDSB students, staff and parents that participated in the 5K FUN WALK on Sunday May 1, 2011. Over 500 members of the TCDSB community came together to raise funds for those students in our midst who are less fortunate.
Funds raised support the Foundation’s Social Work Emergency Fund. This fund provides essentials to students in need. In 2009/2010, the Foundation was able to help 168 students from 75 different schools. While we may have the impression that most of these students come from schools in poor neighbourhoods we know that there is an increasing number of poor students in all neighbourhoods. Sometimes poverty is hiding in plain sight and if it weren’t for the astuteness of school staff, the needs of these students might be overlooked.
This year, we welcomed Olympian, Alexandra Orlando as the Grand Marshall. Her address to the participants during the Mass was inspiring. It resonated most soundly with the multitude of young people present. Alexandra was joined by 7 illustrious Student Grand Marshalls. A special thank you to: Michelle Sraha-Yeboah (Notre Dame), Rachel Fleming (Notre Dame), Danelle Hreljac (Notre Dame), Maria Christina DeRose (St. Joseph Morrow Park), Alexus Maglalang (Father John Redmond), Arvin Santos (Father John Redmond) and Jason Cohen (Father John Redmond).
Following the walk, everyone enjoyed a BBQ lunch, cotton candy, gift bags, activities including entertainment by Duke The Dog, the Toronto Marlies Mascot and Alex the Beaver, the CNE Mascot. Most outstanding was the musical entertainment provided by Dante Alighieri Academy under the direction of Davide Garofalo. Thank you to everyone who joined us at this year’s FUN WALK.
