Students from Sts. Cosmas and Damian receive
The Frank Meagher Bursary
Congratulations Justin Calayca and Edward Yeboah of Sts. Cosmas and
Damian Catholic School for receiving the Frank Meagher Bursary.
The Frank Meagher Bursary is presented annually to a deaf or hard of hearing student in the elementary or secondary panel. The bursary recognizes the importance of the arts for all children. It provides financial support to a deaf or hard of hearing student(s) participating in an Arts Program in the community.
Justin is enrolled in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Sts. Cosmas and Damian. Justin has been participating in ballroom dancing lessons with his grade 5 class. Justin has challenged himself despite his hearing loss and other challenges to participate in “Dance Canada.” Justin has greatly benefited from the interaction and he is learning a new skill which he thoroughly enjoys. Ballroom dance has become a source of pride for Justin and his family. Congratulations Justin!
Edward is also enrolled in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Sts. Cosmas and Damian. He has profound hearing loss in both ears. Like Justin, Edward also participated in ballroom dance lessons through “Dance Canada.” When Edward first began to dance, he was fearful and embarrassed, he did not know if he would be able to hear the music and follow the steps. Edward conquered his fears and has done very well in the dance program. He qualified to compete in a city wide competition! Edward won Gold in both the quarter and the semi finals.
The bursary money will be used so that both Justin and Edward can continue to participate in community based dance lessons. Continued lessons in dance would make it possible for Justin and Edward to practice a skill that they enjoy and their ability to be part of the greater community.
