Barbara and Marek Brodzki Literacy Award

A. HISTORY
This award honours the memory of Barb Brodzki a devoted educator of children with special needs.  Barb was a master teacher of children and adults. Barb taught a wide variety of classes and was also an Assessment and Programming teacher with TCDSB. She was a member of the Balanced Literacy Team and one of the initiators of the Fifth Block Program. She also co-taught an Additional Qualifications Course through OISE during the summer in Special Education.

Barb was passionate in her love of children with special needs and providing them with quality literature. This award was conceived to continue her wish for them. Marek's name was added to this award posthumously in recognition of his support for Barb’s dedication and his own interest in literacy.

An annual “Literacy Tea” is held in their honour to continue to raise money for this fund. Annette Hicks, Assessment and Programming Teacher, (416.222.8282 ext 6180) will be organizing this year's tea on April 15, 2008. The tea will be held from 4 – 6 pm in the Atrium at CEC, 80 Sheppard Avenue East.

B. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD
The Barb Brodzki Award is a special fund administered through The Angel Foundation for Learning. It will be awarded to an elementary school in order to enhance and expand literacy materials for children with special needs in that school. One award of $500 will be given out yearly to a selected elementary school.

C. CRITERIA
This award will be given to an elementary school on an annual basis to purchase literacy materials for children with special needs. The application must include the school’s objectives for the use of the funds, a breakdown of the materials that will be purchased and a rationale of how these specific materials would benefit the literacy needs of children in special education at the school. The literacy materials must be directly available and accessible to the students (books, CD Rom, media etc).

D. APPLICATION PROCESS
Any TCDSB elementary school may apply for this award. Selected schools must wait 3 years before applying again. The successful school will be asked to evaluate the benefit of these materials. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, May 16, 2008.

E. SELECTION PROCESS
The review committee will be composed of members of the Brodzki family and Assessment and Programming Teachers.

George Ermellini Literacy Award

A. HISTORY
This fund honours the memory of George Ermellini dedicated and much-loved TCDSB educator, well known for his commitment to the promotion of literacy within elementary schools of the Toronto Catholic District School Board. 
George was employed by the MSSB, now TCDSB, from 1961 until the time of his retirement in 1996. He attended elementary and secondary schools in the TCDSB. He graduated from Lakeshore Teachers College in 1961 and received a Master of Science Education from Niagara University.

George served as teacher and principal at several TCDSB elementary schools. In 1985, he worked on Special Assignment in the Board’s Curriculum and Special Services Department. His particular commitment to students with special needs is well known. From 1987 to his retirement in 1996 George served as Superintendent of Education. He worked tirelessly with schools across the system and in addition found time to serve on many board, archdiocesan, community and government committees. George is remembered for his warm smile and faith in his fellow educators- a faith that challenged and inspired all with whom he worked.

B. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD 
The George Ermellini Literacy Award is a special fund administered through The Angel Foundation for Learning to support innovative programs in family literacy within elementary schools across the TCDSB.  A grant of $700 will be awarded each year.

C. CRITERIA
The George Ermellini Literacy Award will be awarded to an elementary school in the Toronto Catholic District School Board based on the following criteria: 
The family literacy program focuses on primary children and is supported by the local school community. The program is consistent with the philosophy of the Literacy Team Department of the TCDSB Support for program and its provider is evident.  

D. APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications for the George Ermellini Literacy Award are to be made to the Literacy Team Program Coordinator using George Ermellini Literacy Award Application Form. All applications are to be submitted to the Literacy Team Program Coordinator.  Notification of the award to the school will be made shortly after the application deadline of May 1, 2008.

E. SELECTION PROCESS
The selection will be made by the Board of Directors of The Angel Foundation for Learning, upon recommendation of the Literacy Team Arts Coordinator. The selection committee will include representatives of the Literacy Team and members of the Ermellini family.

Donations to the George Ermellini Literacy Award may be made to The Angel Foundation for Learning, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario, M2N 6E8.

TCSB Employees' Credit Union School Community Award

A. HISTORY
As an organization committed to developing school spirit and community building, the TCSB Employees Credit Union and its Board of Directors has established the School Community Award. This award is given to an elementary school that promotes school spirit in an effort to forge stronger relationships within the school community as well as to build a stronger school community overall.
Through the TCSBECU School Community Award, the Credit Union wishes to encourage schools to emulate the qualities that they so highly value – Catholicity, trust, integrity, philanthropy, community, compassion and charity.

B. DESCRIPTION OF AWARD 
The TCSBECU School Community Award is a special fund administered through The Angel Foundation for Learning to support innovative programs intended to develop school spirit and a stronger school community. A grant of $500 will be awarded each year to an elementary school who meets the criteria listed below.

C. CRITERIA
The TCSBECU School Community Award will be given to an elementary school in the Toronto Catholic District School Board based on the following criteria: 
The program focuses on promoting school spirit and fosters community building at the school level as well as helps to forge relationships within the school community
The program is consistent with Gospel Values.  

D. APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications for the TCSBECU School Community Award can be sent to the Executive Director of The Angel Foundation for Learning by using the School Community Award Application Form. All applications should be submitted by Friday, May 16, 2008.  The award will be presented to the selected elementary school during Education Week.

E.   SELECTION PROCESS
All applications must be forwarded by the school to the Executive Director, The Angel Foundation for Learning before Friday, May 16, 2008. The Selection Committee – comprised of staff and members of the Board of Directors of TCSBECU and staff and members of the Board of Directors of The Angel Foundation for Learning - will review all applications. The recipient will be notified shortly thereafter. The presentation of the award will be made during Education Week.
