CTVs Lance Brown leads over 600 students and families in the 5K Walk raising $30,000 for Toronto’s Hungry Students
The Angel Foundation for Learning hosts the annual 5K FUN WALK in support of Student Nutrition Programs in Toronto Schools

Over 600 members of the Toronto Catholic community stepped into spring and raised $30,000 for hungry Toronto students at The Angel Foundation for Learning 5K FUN WALK on Sunday, May 4, 2008. In an effort to highlight the importance of nourishing student’s body and mind, The Angel Foundation for Learning is using the funds to provide further support for breakfast, snack and lunch programs administered by the Foundation in Toronto Catholic elementary and secondary schools.

To demonstrate the spirit of community building for this important cause, CTV’s sports anchor, Lance Brown acted as Grand Marshall, and led all of the walkers which included a sizeable group of secondary students who participate in daily school student nutrition programs. The talented drumline from Father Henry Carr Secondary School set the tone for the Walk while Dante Alighieri Academy’s music students, provided the musical entertainment during the barbeque. Nine student leaders from various secondary schools, ranging in age from 15-18 acted as Co-Marshalls. They proudly carried the Toronto, Ontario and Canadian flags to pay tribute to the Municipal and Provincial governments who have contributed to Student Nutrition Programs since 1996; and to ignite greater awareness in the hopes that Federal government will provide similar funding for a national healthy food program for vulnerable students.

“The 5K FUN WALK raises funds so that no child attending a Toronto Catholic school is hungry. As an organization devoted to helping children in the educational system, we are aware of the grave impacts that hunger can have on learning, said Sara Camilleri, Executive Director, The Angel Foundation for Learning."

A special thank you to all of the event sponsors and the wonderful volunteers who helped make this event so successful. The Foundation would like to especially acknowledge the following people and groups: the FUN WALK committee members who work tirelessly preparing for this event, cochair committee members Art Witham and Liz Gabbott, Mary Anne O’Leary and the Registration Team, Mary Louise Ireland and Mr. O’Leary, the students volunteers from Cardinal Carter, Notre Dame, St. Patrick, St. Joseph Morrow Park and Brebeuf. The committee also recognizes the efforts of Mike Cornacchia, Joe Natale, Gayle, CEC Cafeteria, Father Michael Lehman, Ralph Peter, Stephen Carey, Donny Feliciano, Wendy Hooker, Noelle Stuart, Dan Samoyloff, Peter Sedgwick, Davide Garofalo, David Jager and Marcelina Lobalsamo, Maria Sanzo and the talented students of St. Francis Xavier that make up Planting Seeds Inc.
